The Medicare program is a federal health insurance program that is divided into various parts. One of these parts, Medicare Part D, is the part of Medicare that covers prescription drugs. Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for with Medicare, you may not feel that prescription drug coverage is something you need right at this moment, but enrolling in a Part D plan anyway can be more beneficial than what you may imagine.
Here’s why you should consider joining Medicare Part D!
Prescription Drug Coverage
The biggest reason why anyone would need Part D is because of the prescription drug coverage it offers. Each Part D plan, of course, provides different coverage for specific prescriptions, but all plans are expected to cover:
- Antidepressants
- HIV/AIDS treatment
- Immunosuppressants
- Antipsychotic medications
- Anticonvulsive treatments for seizure disorders
- Anticancer drugs (unless they are being covered under Part B)
The team with Turning 65 Solutions can help you compare your Part D options to determine which plan provides the coverage you need.
Lowered Out-Of-Pocket Costs For Medicare Drugs
A Part D plan also helps to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for your prescriptions. The plan provides coverage for the listed medications, while you cover a certain amount as copayment or coinsurance. Once you and your plan have reached a certain amount that you have paid for your prescriptions, you will enter what is known as the donut hole. You will then be responsible for only 25% of the cost of your prescriptions until you enter the catastrophic coverage phase, then you would only have to pay a small copayment or 5%.
When Can I Enroll?
If you are needing prescription drug coverage, It is advisable to get a Part D plan as soon as you become eligible. Enrolling as soon as possible means getting the coverage you need as quickly as possible, but it also helps you avoid paying late enrollment penalties. Late enrollment penalties will be added to your monthly premiums if you choose to delay your initial enrollment, so enrolling once you are eligible is always recommended as these penalties are permanent.
To enroll in Medicare Part D, you must have Medicare Part A and/or Part B.
