When Is The Best Time to Enroll In A Medicare Advantage Plan?

Medicare Advantage is one of the two main policy types within Medicare. Thinking about enrolling in Medicare Advantage is an excellent thing if you’re someone who wants to have extra benefits and possibly save on out-of-pocket costs.

One of the things that makes Medicare Advantage unique is that it allows for beneficiaries to add in additional areas of coverage. These areas of coverage can include dental, vision, and hearing coverage. If you’re someone who does want these areas of coverage, keep in mind they’re not available within Original Medicare. Being able to have a choice over your coverage is one of the reasons why so many choose Medicare Advantage.

Let’s go over Medicare Advantage enrollment and talk about the timeline that should be followed if you’re wanting to choose this policy option.

Enrollment

Medicare is very specific when it comes to enrollment periods, so it’s important that you’re aware of the enrollment periods so that you can enroll on time. If you’re not able to enroll on time, then you might end up paying more for your policy or may not have access to health insurance coverage as soon as you’d hoped.

If you’re wanting to enroll in Medicare Advantage, then there are a few things you should know. In order to enroll in this type of policy, you must first enroll in both Parts A and B of Medicare. This enrollment can either be done during your Initial Enrollment Period, which is typically the best time or during the General Enrollment Period.

Then, you can always make the switch to a Medicare Advantage Plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, which is from October 15 to December 7 every year. Keep in mind that taking advantage of this specific enrollment period means your new coverage won’t start until January 1 of the following year.

Once you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can then take advantage of the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31. This period allows you to switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan if you feel it offers better coverage, or drop your Medicare Advantage plan to go back to Original Medicare.

Working With an Insurance Agent

If you’re considering enrolling in Medicare Advantage, then it’s best to find an insurance agent you trust. They’ll be able to answer your questions and provide you with resources you can use throughout your Medicare journey. Many people prefer to find a local insurance agent so that they can meet with them in person.
