Do Veterans Have To Enroll In Medicare?

Medicare is not mandatory, and veterans are not required to enroll. Although, they may face late enrollment penalties if they choose not to enroll once they are eligible.

This may not be an issue for some veterans, such as those who have access to other forms of coverage, but for others, the late penalty can be overwhelming. While it is not required that you enroll in Medicare, we suggest you do it as early as possible. This is the best way to save on Medicare costs long-term.

Are Veterans Eligible for Medicare

Being a veteran does not eliminate you from receiving Medicare benefits. Though, you may be wondering if VA coverage conflicts with Medicare coverage. If this is the case, you should be happy to know that you can have both VA coverage and Medicare at the same time. The only requirements are that you must be:

  • Age 65 or over, or
  • Any age with a qualifying disability or condition

Is Medicare Mandatory?

If you are considering delaying or declining Medicare coverage to rely on your VA benefits, you need to think carefully. While Medicare is not mandatory, you can still give yourself extra coverage by enrolling in Medicare.

Medicare vs VA Coverage

According to Healthline.com, Medicare provides coverage through an entirely different system than the VA. The systems don’t typically interact with one another, so you must know which plan is responsible for your health care needs.

When it comes to VA coverage, the main way to get complete coverage is by seeking care in a VA hospital or clinic. Sometimes, the VA may authorize you to receive care in a non-VA facility, but this approval must be given before you receive treatment.

Medicare helps in situations just like this. With Medicare, you can get help paying for treatments that you receive in non-VA medical facilities.
